macOS 26

macOS Tahoe on unsupported Macs

macOS Tahoe 26 is the last macOS for Intel Macs. Apple supports it on only four Intel models. OpenCore Legacy Patcher 3.0 brings it to the other Macs on its list, from the 2007 iMac to the 2019 iMac. Here is what runs, what breaks, and how to install it.

Short answer

Yes, with OpenCore Legacy Patcher 3.0.0. Every Mac OCLP supports can install macOS Tahoe (newest installer in the app: 26.7.2, build 25G332). As of October 28, 2026, OCLP 3.0.0 is still a pre-release (3.0.0-rc.5), and its developers warn: “Expect issues resulting in instability, system crashes, and potential data loss.” The stable 2.5.1 does not support Tahoe. If you rely on your Mac every day, Sequoia is the safer choice for now.

Why Tahoe support took a year

Apple released macOS Tahoe in September 2025. OCLP's last release before it, 2.4.1, came out on September 1, 2025, and the next one, 2.5.0, a year later. In June 2026 the team explained (issue #1183) that Tahoe's changes caused delays “even from just one beta to another”, and that the team had shrunk. The first 3.0.0 release candidate followed on October 4, 2026.

Which Macs can run macOS Tahoe with OCLP

Grouped by how well graphics work, because that decides the experience. Each entry links to that Mac's page with the exact patches.

86 Mac models run macOS Tahoe only with OpenCore Legacy Patcher; 6 Intel models run it natively. Generated from the OCLP 3.0.0 source.

With OCLP: Metal GPUs 16

Graphics acceleration is restored with the Metal 31001 patch set (Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, AMD GCN, Polaris). The smoothest unsupported experience.

With OCLP: legacy Metal GPUs 24

Ivy Bridge, Haswell and NVIDIA Kepler use the older Metal 3802 drivers. Works, with more patching and some app issues.

With OCLP: GPUs without Metal 37

OpenGL acceleration is restored, but apps that require Metal do not run. Usable for basic work; expect missing features.

What works and what does not on Tahoe

From the 3.0.0 changelog and the patch sets in the source code:

  • Graphics acceleration is restored for non-Metal GPUs, legacy Metal (3802) GPUs and later Metal (31001) GPUs. Apple dropped Intel Ivy Bridge, Haswell and NVIDIA Kepler drivers long ago, so those Macs rely on OCLP's restored drivers.
  • Wi-Fi works through the Legacy Wireless (Atheros and older Broadcom) and Modern Wireless (newer Broadcom) patch sets, which 3.0.0 rewrote.
  • Audio needs a new Modern Audio patch set on Tahoe for every supported Mac: our source run shows it applies to all 84 non-native models. Patching it needs Apple's Kernel Debug Kit, which OCLP downloads through Dortania's KdkSupportPkg.
  • FileVault 2 is supported again on Tahoe (changelog: “Restore FileVault support on macOS 26”).
  • Touch ID and Apple Pay on 2016–2017 MacBook Pros with the T1 chip work through the T1 patch set.
  • Penryn Macs (2008–2010 Core 2 Duo) needed a fix to boot Tahoe 26.4 and later, included in 3.0.0.
  • Fusion Drive: Tahoe's installer does not support Fusion Drives, according to users on the MacRumors Tahoe thread. Install to a single SSD instead.
  • Apple Intelligence requires Apple silicon. It is not available on any Intel Mac.

Non-Metal Macs on Tahoe

Users on the MacRumors thread report that Tahoe's new interface is noticeably slower on non-Metal GPUs (most 2008–2011 Macs) than Sequoia. OCLP 3.0.0 supports them, but for these Macs we recommend Monterey for daily use. See how we pick.

How to install macOS Tahoe with OCLP 3.0

  1. Back up and update the firmware

Make a Time Machine backup or a full clone. Then make sure the Mac has the newest macOS Apple offers it, so its firmware is current.
  2. Install OCLP 3.0.0

Download OpenCore-Patcher.pkg from the 3.0.0-rc.5 release and install it. See Download.
  3. Create the Tahoe installer

In the app, choose Create macOS Installer > Download macOS Installer, pick macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, and write it to a USB drive of 32 GB or more. Dortania recommends 32 GB because recent installers plus OCLP's files no longer fit on 16 GB, and the app only lists drives larger than 15 GB (macos_installer_handler.py). The app adds OCLP to the USB drive so it can root-patch automatically after the install.
  4. Build and install OpenCore to the USB drive

Choose Build and Install OpenCore; when the build finishes, click Install OpenCore and pick the USB drive's EFI partition. If you are preparing the USB on a different Mac, set the target model first in Settings.
  5. Boot the installer

Restart holding Option. Choose EFI Boot (the OpenCore entry), then Install macOS Tahoe in the OpenCore boot picker. See the boot picker guide.
  6. Install, then make it boot without the USB

After the install, open OCLP, choose Build and Install OpenCore again, and install it to the internal disk, so the Mac boots Tahoe on its own.
  7. Apply root patches

If the app does not do it automatically, choose Post-Install Root Patch > Start Root Patching, enter your password, and restart. This restores graphics, Wi-Fi and audio. Keep Ethernet or a phone tether ready: Wi-Fi may not work until this step, and it downloads a Kernel Debug Kit.

Updating macOS Tahoe on a patched Mac

Point updates (26.7.1 to 26.7.2) work through Software Update as usual. Each update replaces the system volume, which removes the root patches. After the update, OCLP shows a prompt to reinstall them; until you do, graphics, Wi-Fi and audio may not work. Update the OCLP app first when a new version is out. Details: Updating.

Macs that cannot get Tahoe

Apple dropped these Intel Macs from Tahoe, and OCLP cannot help because they have the T2 chip: MacBook Air 2018–2020, MacBook Pro 2018–2019 (and the 13-inch 2020 with two Thunderbolt ports), Mac mini 2018 and iMac Pro. They stay on macOS Sequoia, which still gets security updates. See T2 Macs.

Common questions

Does OpenCore Legacy Patcher support macOS Tahoe?

Yes, from version 3.0.0. On October 28, 2026 its newest build, 3.0.0-rc.5, was still a pre-release. The stable 2.5.1 supports up to Sequoia.

When will OCLP 3.0.0 be released?

The developers do not give dates. On November 3, 2026 the changelog on the main branch was updated with a final “3.0.0” heading, which usually comes shortly before a release. We update this page when it ships.

Can a 2012 MacBook Pro run macOS Tahoe?

Yes, with OCLP 3.0.0. All four 2012 MacBook Pro models (MacBookPro9,1, 9,2, 10,1 and 10,2) are supported. They use the legacy Metal (Ivy Bridge, and Kepler on 15-inch models) graphics patches. See MacBook Pro 2012.

Can a 2018 Mac mini run macOS Tahoe?

No. It has a T2 chip, which OCLP does not support, and Apple's last version for it is Sequoia.

Will a Mac on Tahoe get macOS 27?

No. macOS 27 does not support Intel Macs. Why.

Do I need to erase my Mac to install Tahoe with OCLP?

No. You can upgrade over macOS Big Sur or newer and keep your data, as long as the existing system was not patched with another patcher (Patched Sur, bigmac). Back up first.
