T2 Macs (2018–2020) and OCLP

The last generation of Intel Macs has Apple's T2 security chip. OpenCore Legacy Patcher does not support them, but most of them do not need it yet.

Short answer

OCLP does not support Macs with the T2 chip. When Sequoia dropped the 2018–2019 MacBook Air, Dortania wrote that T2 models “cannot be supported at this time” because of kernel panics that still need “a significant amount of development work” (macOS Sequoia). Most T2 Macs still run Sequoia or Tahoe from Apple, with security updates.

Not a T2 Mac: the iMac 2019 (iMac19,1, 19,2) has no T2 chip, stops at Sequoia from Apple, and runs Tahoe with OCLP 3.0. See iMac 2019.

Why T2 Macs are hard

On these Macs the T2 chip handles the SSD controller, secure boot, audio and other hardware. Newer macOS versions expect it to behave in ways that, on dropped models, have led to kernel panics while booting (the 2018 MacBook Air on Sequoia; reports of storage driver panics on Tahoe). The fixes need deep reverse-engineering, and the OCLP team is small.

Your options

  • Stay on Apple's last supported macOS; Sequoia and Tahoe receive security updates.
  • The experimental community fork BridgePatcher targets T2 Macs, but its author calls T2 support alpha and “not ready for general use”. See OCLP forks.
  • Plan for Apple silicon, Linux, or ChromeOS Flex when updates end. See What to do with an old Mac.

Common questions

Can a 2018 Mac mini run macOS Tahoe?

Not with OCLP. Its last macOS from Apple is Sequoia.

Can a 2019 MacBook Pro run macOS Tahoe?

The 16-inch 2019 runs Tahoe from Apple. The 13- and 15-inch 2018–2019 models stop at Sequoia, and OCLP cannot change that.

Will OCLP ever support T2 Macs?

The team has not announced it. With macOS 27 excluding all Intel Macs, any future T2 work could only target Tahoe.
