macOS 27 and Intel Macs: what you can still run

macOS 27 Golden Gate is the first macOS that runs only on Apple silicon. No Intel Mac can install it, and OpenCore Legacy Patcher will not change that. macOS Tahoe 26 is the end of the line, and with OCLP almost every Intel Mac from 2008 can reach it.

Short answer

No Intel Mac can run macOS 27, with or without OpenCore Legacy Patcher. In June 2026 the OCLP team wrote that there are “currently no plans to attempt working with Golden Gate”, because Apple removed most Intel code from it. The newest macOS for any Intel Mac is macOS Tahoe 26 (26.7.2 today): natively on four 2019–2020 models, and with OCLP 3.0 on the 86 models OCLP supports.

What Apple changed in macOS 27

Apple announced in 2025 that Tahoe would be the last macOS for Intel Macs, and macOS 27 followed through. The OCLP team's announcement (issue #1183, June 15, 2026) lists the six Intel Macs that Golden Gate dropped, the last Intel models Apple still supported:

Model identifierMacLast macOS
MacPro7,1Mac Pro (2019)Tahoe
MacBookPro16,1MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)Tahoe
MacBookPro16,2MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)Tahoe
MacBookPro16,4MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) with Radeon Pro 5600MTahoe
iMac20,1iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)Tahoe
iMac20,2iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) with Radeon Pro 5700/5700 XTTahoe

The team also noted that most kernel and driver extensions for Intel Mac hardware were removed in the first beta, and that userspace is “almost entirely Apple silicon-only”, apart from Safari and command-line tools kept for Rosetta. In their words: “What remains (in the Kernel Debug Kit and on-disk) is not enough to grant entry to this release of macOS.”

Why OCLP cannot do what it did before

Every earlier OCLP release worked because each new macOS still contained Intel code: OCLP only had to boot it on older hardware and put back drivers for chips Apple had dropped. macOS 27 removes the Intel versions of the system itself, not just old drivers. There is nothing to boot. Running Apple silicon software on an Intel processor would need emulation, which is not something a patcher can provide at usable speed.

Ignore “macOS 27 on Intel” downloads

Any site or video offering a macOS 27 patcher or installer for Intel Macs is wrong or malicious. Neither Apple nor the OCLP team provides one.

What each Intel Mac can run now

Tahoe is the ceiling for everyone. How you get there, or how close you get, depends on the Mac:

How long Intel Macs will get updates

Apple usually keeps releasing security updates for the two macOS versions before the current one. With macOS 27 current, that means Sequoia and Tahoe keep receiving security fixes, and Tahoe should get them the longest. Apple has said Intel Macs on Tahoe will continue to receive security updates after macOS 27; news reports put that at roughly two more years, but Apple does not publish end dates.

Patched Macs get the same updates as supported ones: OCLP installs Apple's own macOS, so Software Update works, and OCLP re-applies its patches after each update.

Your options

  • Move to Tahoe with OCLP 3.0 if your Mac is a 2012 or newer model, to get the longest run of security updates. macOS Tahoe on unsupported Macs.
  • Stay on Sequoia if it works well for you; it is still supported, and OCLP's Sequoia patches are mature.
  • Plan the next Mac. Any Apple silicon Mac runs macOS 27.
  • Give the old Mac a second life with Linux or ChromeOS Flex when macOS updates end. What to do with an old Mac.

Common questions

Will OpenCore Legacy Patcher support macOS 27?

No plans. The team said so in June 2026 (issue #1183) and remains focused on Tahoe and earlier versions.

Can a 2019 or 2020 Intel MacBook Pro run macOS 27?

No. The 16-inch 2019 and 13-inch 2020 (four ports) MacBook Pros stop at Tahoe.

Is macOS Tahoe the last macOS for Intel Macs?

Yes. macOS 27 requires Apple silicon.

Can I run macOS 27 in a virtual machine on an Intel Mac?

No. macOS 27 is built for Apple silicon only, so an Intel Mac cannot virtualize it either.
