Alternatives to OpenCore Legacy Patcher

There is no other maintained tool that does what OCLP does for macOS Big Sur and newer on real Macs. The real alternatives are different choices: stay put, use an older patcher, or switch operating system.

Short answer

For a newer macOS on an unsupported Mac, OpenCore Legacy Patcher is the only maintained option. Patched Sur and bigmac were Big Sur-only and are retired; dosdude1's patchers cover Catalina and older; forks are archived, frozen or experimental. If you do not need macOS, Linux and ChromeOS Flex keep an old Mac secure and fast.

Patched Sur and bigmac

Both were Big Sur patchers from 2020–2021. OCLP's README notes that installs made with them “cannot be used” with OCLP because of broken file integrity, though you can reinstall macOS with OCLP and keep your data.

Hackintosh guides

Dortania's OpenCore Install Guide is for PCs, not Macs. OCLP is the tool for real Macs. See Is OCLP a Hackintosh?

Common questions

Is there anything better than OpenCore Legacy Patcher?

For newer macOS on a real Mac, no maintained alternative exists in 2026.

OCLP vs Linux on an old MacBook Pro?

OCLP keeps macOS and your Mac apps; Linux gives a lighter, long-supported system with different software. Read What to do with an old Mac.
