How the MacBook hardware changed, year by year
Each line compares a year with the one before it, using the CPU, graphics, Wi-Fi and root-patch data in OCLP's source. It shows why one year behaves differently from its neighbour.
- 2006 → 2007: graphics: Intel GMA X3100 replaces Intel GMA 950; Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM43224 (legacy) replaces Atheros (AirPortAtheros40).
- 2007 → 2008: CPU: Core 2 Duo (Penryn) replaces Core 2 Duo (Conroe/Merom); graphics: NVIDIA GeForce (Tesla) added; Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM4331 (legacy) added; Apple's last macOS moves from Lion to Lion / El Capitan; Tahoe root patches: new Intel GMA X3100, Legacy Backlight Control, Legacy USB 1.1, Legacy Wireless, Modern Audio and Nvidia Tesla.
- 2008 → 2009: graphics: Intel GMA X3100 dropped; Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM4360 (802.11ac) replaces Broadcom BCM43224 (legacy); Apple's last macOS moves from Lion / El Capitan to El Capitan / High Sierra; Tahoe root patches: new Modern Wireless; no longer Intel GMA X3100.
- 2009 → 2010: Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM4331 (legacy) dropped; Apple's last macOS moves from El Capitan / High Sierra to High Sierra; Tahoe root patches: no longer Legacy Backlight Control and Legacy Wireless.
- 2010 → 2015–2017: CPU: 5th-gen Core (Broadwell), 6th-gen Core (Skylake) and 7th-gen Core (Kaby Lake) replaces Core 2 Duo (Penryn); graphics: Intel Iris / HD 500-series (Skylake), Intel Iris / HD 6000 (Broadwell) and Intel Iris Plus / HD 600-series (Kaby Lake) replaces NVIDIA GeForce (Tesla); Wi-Fi: Broadcom BCM4350/4360-class (AirportBrcmNIC) replaces Broadcom BCM4360 (802.11ac); Apple's last macOS moves from High Sierra to Big Sur / Monterey / Ventura; Tahoe root patches: new Intel Broadwell, Intel Skylake and PCIe FaceTime Camera; no longer Legacy USB 1.1 and Nvidia Tesla.
Where MacBook owners report trouble
47 issues in OCLP's tracker were filed with a MacBook model as the machine model; 2 supported MacBook models have no report at all. By keyword match, the topics that come up most are install or update (21), keyboard and trackpad (6), graphics (5) and sleep and power (4). The models with the most reports: MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) MacBook5,1 (14), MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) MacBook8,1 (12), MacBook (13-inch, Early 2008) MacBook4,1 (6), MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) MacBook5,2 (6) and MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) MacBook7,1 (6). These are owners' reports, not confirmed bugs, and most were filed in 2021 and 2022 on early OCLP versions.

MacBook 2010
Short answer
Apple stopped at macOS High Sierra. With OpenCore Legacy Patcher the MacBook 2010 runs macOS Big Sur through macOS Tahoe 26. Our pick for most people: macOS Monterey (its GPU has no Metal support, so newer versions lose more apps). No Intel Mac can run macOS 27.
